Handout 6: Saving Information from the Internet into Folders & Sub-Folders

For the Task, you will have to set up a structured filing system. This should allow you to create and develop information for ease of storage, retrieval and sharing. Your filing system must show that you can manage information as you develop and finalise the materials for the task.  After you have created a main folder, you should create some sub-folders with appropriate names for your filing system that will contain your specific work.  This handout will demonstrate how to save an image from the Internet into a sub-folder within a main folder.

Digital Literacy Log

This is an on-going digital literacy task and should be filled in at
the end of every lesson. This will help in preparation for the structured discussion which is held one-to-one with the you and the assessor.

It is not designed to be a question and answer session. The content of the structured discussion will be directly related to the response of your controlled task.

Digital Literacy Skills Checklist

Introduction

    ·        How confident are you that you can work effectively, and safely, online?

    ·        When you search for information, are you confident that you will be able to find the right information quickly?

·        Do you know how to tell if the information you find is relevant, and from a good source?

·        Do you know how to make the best of online networking tools like Facebook and Twitter?

·        Are you happy with the way you present yourself online, and do you know how to manage your 'digital identity'?

The skills you need for all of these situations are known as 'digital literacy'. These are skills that are not only useful in your personal life, but can be invaluable at work. In a digital age, they are all essential to employability.

The Six Strands of Digital Literacy

Essential Digital Literacy is about knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours in the use of digital devices. Essential Skills Wales have designed the digital literacy qualification to cover six strands of knowledge within digital literacy.

In order to gain the Essential Digital Literacy qualification, learners must demonstrate their skills in a controlled task which includes a structured discussion.
