The Six Strands of Digital Literacy

Essential Digital Literacy is about knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours in the use of digital devices. Essential Skills Wales have designed the digital literacy qualification to cover six strands of knowledge within digital literacy.

In order to gain the Essential Digital Literacy qualification, learners must demonstrate their skills in a controlled task which includes a structured discussion.

Digital Responsibility

Safe, secure and legal application of digital literacy in respect of yourself and others.
This module covers e-safety and encourages learners to work safely. Discuss email protocol, phishing, spam and issues of online security.

Digital Productivity

Selection and application of the most suitable resource(s) to achieve an objective. The learners will organise files in a systematic way; identify and use digital technology to develop solutions to a task; maintain and develop a system to ensure that work can be produced in an efficient and effective way.

Digital Information Literacy

Using digital literacy to research and locate relevant information. Learners need to demonstrate awareness of the validity of information found and issues related to copyright.

Digital Collaboration

Collaborating and working with others to achieve shared objectives. Learners need to demonstrate a range of skills and etiquette to work effectively with or within a team.

Digital Creativity

Applying own initiative to maximise the potential of digital literacy. This module challenges learners to think creatively in a digital environment and to be critical and reflective in relation to their target audience.

Digital Learning

Evaluating the use of digital literacy and developing new skills. Learners should be able to respond to a variety of tasks: selecting, applying and evaluating a range of familiar and unfamiliar digital tools.
